    Frequently Asked Questions

Please call us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

These are fundamentally different processes, and for oriental rugs, hand washing is generally the preferred method:

    Hand Washing (Immersion Cleaning):

    • The rug is fully submerged in water in a specialized facility
    • Cleaned with gentle, pH-balanced solutions appropriate for the specific fibers and dyes
    • Scrubbed by hand or with soft brushes to work cleaning solution through the pile
    • Thoroughly rinsed multiple times to remove all soap and contaminants
    • Excess water is extracted, then the rug is dried flat or hung in a controlled environment
    • Advantages: Most thorough cleaning, removes dirt from deep in the foundation, gentler on delicate fibers and dyes, better for pet contamination
    • Best for: Hand-knotted rugs, antiques, silk rugs, valuable pieces, rugs with urine or heavy soiling

    Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction):

    • Done on-site or in a facility using a machine that injects hot water and cleaning solution, then extracts it
    • Similar to how wall-to-wall carpeting is typically cleaned
    • Much faster process than hand washing
    • Advantages: Convenient, less expensive, adequate for surface cleaning
    • Limitations: Doesn't clean as deeply, can leave soap residue if not done properly, harder to control water temperature and pH for delicate dyes, not ideal for rugs with structural issues

    The honest truth:

    • For valuable, antique, or hand-knotted oriental rugs, hand washing is worth the extra cost - it's gentler and more thorough
    • Steam cleaning might be acceptable for newer, machine-made rugs or if you're just doing maintenance cleaning on a sturdy rug
    • Some companies advertise "steam cleaning" but what they really mean is hot water extraction done carelessly, which can damage oriental rugs

Bottom line: If your rug is valuable or irreplaceable, invest in proper hand washing by a specialist.

    • Most pet urine can be successfully removed with professional cleaning
    • Very old or severe cases may show improvement but might not be 100% eliminated
    • In extreme cases where urine has caused dye bleeding or fiber damage, the stain may be permanent even if the odor is removed
    • Some discoloration might remain on older stains, though it's often significantly improved

    • Size - Larger rugs cost more in total but often have a lower per-square-foot rate. A small 4x6 rug might cost $75-$200, while a large 9x12 could run $300-$850+ *
    • Rug type and material - Silk rugs, antiques, and hand-knotted pieces typically cost more than machine-made wool rugs because they require gentler, more specialized handling.
    • Condition - Heavy soiling, pet stains, odors, or significant repairs will increase the price. Basic maintenance cleaning costs less than restoration-level work.
    • Cleaning method - Hand washing (typically better for fine rugs) usually costs more than machine cleaning. Specialty treatments for moths, stains, or odors add to the base price.

    * We reserve the right to adjust our prices based on seeing the rug's condition in person

Regular maintenance between professional cleanings will extend your rug's life and keep it looking its best:

    Vacuuming:

    • Vacuum regularly (weekly for high-traffic areas, every 2 weeks for lighter use)
    • Vacuum in the direction of the pile, not against it
    • Use a vacuum without a beater bar, or turn the beater bar off - the rotating brush can damage fringe and pull fibers
    • Avoid vacuuming the fringe, or use the hose attachment gently if needed
    • Flip the rug and vacuum the back once or twice a year to remove deep-down grit

    Rotating:

    • Rotate your rug 180 degrees every 6-12 months to ensure even wear, especially in high-traffic areas or spots with direct sunlight

    Immediate spill response:

    • Blot (don't rub) spills immediately with a clean, white cloth
    • Work from the outside of the spill toward the center to avoid spreading
    • Use plain water or a tiny amount of mild dish soap if needed
    • Avoid harsh chemicals or store-bought carpet cleaners - they can damage dyes
    • For anything beyond a simple spill, contact a professional

    Protection:

    • Use a quality rug pad underneath to prevent slipping, add cushioning, and protect the foundation
    • Keep rugs out of direct sunlight when possible, or use UV-filtering window treatments to prevent fading
    • Rearrange furniture occasionally to avoid permanent indentations
    • Avoid placing rugs in consistently damp areas

    What to watch for:

    • Check periodically for moths (look for larvae, loose fibers, or bare spots) especially in low-traffic areas
    • Address any fraying edges or loose threads promptly before they worsen

General rule: The better you maintain it between cleanings, the less intensive (and expensive) professional cleanings will be.
